About this Event

An event for Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count.

While many of us see the disappearance of vegetated backyards, Helen has created habitat for butterflies in her small backyard in an inner city Brisbane suburb by planting many larval host plants. Over the last 30 plus years she has raised some 50 butterfly species that way. She has been able to observe full life cycles of many species.

Helen founded the Butterflies and Other Invertebrates Club in 1994 and was its president for 12 years. She loves to share her knowledge on and is an experienced environmental educator.

Helen’s talk will focus on our many local butterfly species and their host plants, on ways to establish them in bushland as well as in gardens, on the ecological benefits native plants provide not only as host plants for butterfly larvae but for other critters too. Helen’s passion are the small critters, and she has a particular love for groundcovers as they host and harbour so many of our tiny invertebrates.

As usual, Helen’s enthusiasm will shine through in this talk. We will all have the pleasure of learning lots. Our environment will be all the better for it as we take inspiration and ideas for action from this presentation.

We have allocated one hour for Helen’s talk and Q & A. We already know that she is happy to continue to answer questions beyond this time, should the demand be there.

We thank Brisbane City Council for supporting Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count through the Environment Grant Program.
