In this harsh and beautiful place, the settlement of Port Arthur was expected to function effectively and efficiently. This took many people, who each brought and added their own character. In “Prison & Power: Coercion & Corruption in a Convict Settlement”, a series of three ‘sketches of life’ will introduce you to some of those who held authority - prison wardens, overseers and a Commandant - as well as the convicts who were under their control. Set in the mid 1800’s, a time of no internet, no telephone or even a road, the stories come from real people and the struggles they faced.
