Wildlife Habitat Clump Refresher Course

WILDLIFE HABITAT CLUMP REFRESHER COURSE

DESCRIPTION

Wildlife habitat clumps (WHCs) are patches of retained native forest that are implemented in forestry operations for a wide range of reasons, but primarily for the retention of habitat features for mature forest-dependant fauna species. Mature trees have features such as tree hollows, which provide important habitat for a large number of native fauna. These features take a long time to develop, longer than typical rotation intervals, and so are not maintained within forestry areas unless targeted retention occurs. The careful selection and retention of habitat trees can therefore play a critical part of managing a production forest landscape to maintain fauna populations.

This Wildlife Habitat Clump refresher training follows the recent release of the updated WHC technical note, and follows a number of enquiries about the implementation of this Code provision in a range of situations. This course has been specifically designed for those working in the forestry industry to better understand the requirements for selecting, implementing and auditing WHCs, and to promote better environmental outcomes from the application of WHCs in forestry operations. The course will cover the purpose of WHCs, the identification of habitat trees, the priorities for locating WHCs and the management of WHCs in different silvicultural scenarios.

The course will be presented by FPA staff, and has been offered at minimal cost to encourage maximum attendance by relevant industry representatives. Those working in native forestry are strongly encouraged to attend. Those working in plantation forestry but with an interest in native forestry may also find the course beneficial.
