Weave a MELON BASKET with Jilli and Anna - Ross Tasmania

Basket Weaving at Ross -the popular Melon basket workshop returns for year 2 !!

Spend a weekend creating a larger more intricate piece in the beautiful heritage town Ross, Tasmania -In-person weekend event will take place at Ross, Tasmania 

Join us for a 2 day hands-on experience and discover the beauty of creating your own unique basket. A great workshop to do after the beginner' s weekend

Included in your weekend is a stayover at the highly rated accommodation Riverview at Ross on the Saturday night 

9.30 am start on the Sat and finish early afternoon on the Sunday - please note the package includes a stayover in Ross on Saturday night - Friday night can also be booked at a special rate for attendees)

Included in your ticket price of $295 is

Join facilitators Anna and Jilli to learn how to use natural materials to make a small melon basket using found, gathered and repurposed materials as supplied.

Some experience is helpful, but definitely not essential.

Learn how to make the rings which make up the basket framework and the god's eye lashing which attaches the rings to each other. We'll then insert ribs to get the shape you like.

Frames are generally formed with cane and/or vines such as grape, passionfruit, jasmine and wisteria. If you have some potentially suitable frame materials, you are welcome to contact Anna for advice on storage and preparation prior to the weekend. The weaving is done with red hot poker, tall spike rush, bulrush, iris, strips of fabrics and NZ flax.

If you have an interesting bit of vine or an old blanket to tear up that you think you might like to incorporate, please bring it along.

We will also discuss various plant fibres and materials and how to harvest, store and prepare them for weaving.

All materials are provided; however, feel free to bring along any items that you might like to add as decoration to make it unique to you eg seashells, buttons, rocks, nuts, feathers, driftwood bits, etc a

Morning tea is provided.

What to bring:

Secateurs, scissors, an old towel and a few pegs.
You can also bring some of your own plant fibres if you wish.

Day 1

Discuss basket shapes and how to achieve them. Make a ring the same size as the one provided. Construct the frame and make the God’s eye lashing which holds the frame together. Insert your ribs to get the shape you want. Choose your weavers and begin weaving.

Day 2

Continue weaving over your frame with the prepared weavers. Then trim and tidy up the loose ends and embellish if you wish.
