Jode Brewster is one of Hobart’s most promising young musicians, he has a deep respect and love for jazz music, and loves to share it with people.
Jode’s love for jazz music began when his father first played the Sidney Bechet tune “Blue Horizon” to him. After trying the clarinet for a few months, he quickly moved onto the saxophone and worked on the music of the 1950s-1970s primarily, but he always kept a keen interest in traditional jazz.
Playing with Django’s Tiger, Jode is incredibly excited to perform in an ensemble of musicians who share this passion.
Since beginning his study at the UTAS Conservatorium, Jode has broken into the Tasmanian music scene and been able to play with many of the greatest musicians that Hobart has to offer, such as Matthew Boden, Alistair Dobson, Kelly Ottaway, Charlie McCarthy and Damien Kingston.
He has joined many ongoing projects over the past few years, including Isabella Mahmoud, PALENCIA, and The Drift Kings. Along with leading his own ensembles such as Jode Brewster Quartet, PMD trio, and his own 12 piece big band.
Now with a completed bachelors degree in music, Jode is pursuing an honours degree in big band composition, researching the arranging techniques used by Vanessa Perica in her Australian all-star big band.
Jode has been the recipient of awards such as the Clarence Jazz Festival Scholarship (2023), UTAS Ossa Prize (2024), and the Hedberg Scholarship (2025).
