About
Step into the fascinating world of ruby and sapphire, two of the most celebrated gemstones on Earth, both formed from the same mineral: corundum.
This two-day short course is designed for beginners and curious minds, offering an engaging introduction to the science of gemmology. Across the two days, you’ll learn how gemstones are identified using professional equipment, including microscopes, refractometers, and polariscope, while gaining hands-on insight into how gemmologists distinguish what is real, treated, or synthetic.
We’ll explore what gives rubies their rich red colour, sapphires their extraordinary spectrum of hues, and how subtle differences can reveal a stone’s origin and value. Along the way, we’ll uncover the stories, myths, and famous “imposters” that have shaped our understanding of these remarkable gems.
Whether you’re a jewellery lover, a budding collector, or simply intrigued by the hidden world within gemstones, this course offers a rare opportunity to see and understand what lies beneath the surface.
