An Evening of Elegance

The Student Music Collective present their first performance of 2026, ‘An Evening of Elegance’.

After an ambitious and successful year of concerts in 2025, The Secret Orchestral Society make their return for 2026 with a short evening of orchestral favourites in ‘An Evening of Elegance’. This hour-long evening programme welcomes all music lovers, from the seasoned orchestral expert to the intrigued first-timer, and makes for a wonderful end to an early Autumn weekend. 

Beethoven’s 8th Symphony marks the centerpiece of this curation, providing a well-balanced hour of strength, whimsy and beauty. Alongside this masterpiece, we present a performance of Mendelssohn’s timeless ‘Die Hebriden’ overture, and Faure’s enchanting orchestral ‘Pavane’. 

We welcome back William Newbery to the podium, a rising conductor in Tasmania regularly working with the Secret Orchestral Society, alongside Miaw Yng Lim as concertmaster after her debut as leader in ‘Premiere Rhapsodie’ in October 2025. SMC also welcomes a range of new and existing members, showcasing the rising musicians studying at the University of Tasmania’s recently re-established Conservatorium of Music, alongside other members of the UTAS and broader Hobart classical music scene. 

Join us for an hour of orchestral bliss on May 10th at 5pm for ‘An Evening of Elegance’.

'Première Rhapsodie' takes place on the unceded lands of the Mouheneener people in nipaluna (Hobart), where sovereignty has never been ceded. The Secret Orchestral Society and the Student Music Collective stands for a history of truth, which acknowledges the ongoing impacts of colonisation upon the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

ACCESSIBILITY

The Stanley Burbury Theatre is located on Churchill Avenue in Sandy Bay TAS 7005, on the University of Tasmania Main Campus. There is level access to the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre from the UTAS carpark on Churchill Avenue. 

There are several onsite car parks, both in front of the Theatre and in surrounding side streets and University roads. Once inside the venue, there are seats available with level access, in addition to space for wheelchairs and mobility aids.

The venue does have an accessible, non-gendered toilet and a changing station. A programme with notes about each of the pieces will be provided, and there will not be an Auslan Interpretor at this event. 

Additional information about concerning weather and safety around it will be distributed in the days leading up to the performance.
