George Town Council in Northern Tasmania presents "A Curation of Place", a contemporary ceramics exhibition by Suemi Chiba at the Watch House Gallery. This exhibition brings together wheel thrown forms and layered surface techniques, exploring connections between material, landscape and identity through an intuitive and process led approach.
This body of work reflects Suemi Chiba's nuanced exploration of place through both form and material. Drawing on her Japanese, English, Canadian and Australian background, her practice carries a layered cultural perspective while remaining grounded in the physicality of clay.
Located on Macquarie Street within the historic Watch House Gallery, the exhibition sits within walking distance of the Kanamaluka (Tamar River), the Jim Mooney Gallery, George Town Art and Artisan's Guild and the Bass and Flinders Maritime Museum. Low Head Lighthouse and the Pilot Station are a short drive away, offering a layered cultural and coastal experience. The intimate scale and heritage character of the gallery deepen the encounter, encouraging slow, reflective viewing. Visitors are invited to experience the work and reconnect with place through material and memory.
