Winter Season Pass: Nipaluna/Hobart Lunchbox Concerts 2026

Our immensely popular lunchtime concert series returns for five more fabulous concerts! PLEASE NOTE this series is now taking place at St David's Cathedral instead of Hobart Town Hall.

Curated by VDB’s Artistic Director, Julia Fredersdorff, our 2026 series showcases some of Lutruwita/Tasmania's finest musical talent, alongside interstate and international guests, in an eclectic program of music spanning a rich variety of genres and styles.

Escape the hustle and bustle and step into an oasis of calm listening to beautiful music in the glorious surrounds of St David's Cathedral.

TUESDAY 4 AUGUST @ 1.05pm - Mini VDB

Van Diemen’s Band performs Baroque gems for small ensemble, with some of the rarer instruments from the Baroque era taking centre stage - including the viola da gamba, the always-popular theorbo and … the musette! Featuring Laura Vaughan (gamba), Simon Martyn-Ellis (theorbo) and Simon Rickard (musette).

TUESDAY 11 AUGUST @ 1.05pm - Claire Edwardes

"Sorceress of percussion" Claire Edwardes is the only person to win the APRA Art Music Luminary Award four times. A charismatic percussion virtuosi, this solo recital sees Claire performing works from her latest album, Dual Attractor, ranging from Missy Mazzoli to Paul Mac.

TUESDAY 18 AUGUST @ 1.05pm - Meyers & Yap*

Acclaimed fiddlers Katie Yap and Rachel Meyers bring their new duo project to the Lunchbox Concerts. Together they explore the confluence of folk and baroque music: haunting traditional tunes and songs sit alongside intricate original compositions and their own arrangements of pieces by baroque composers Henry Purcell and Diego Ortiz, all delivered with warmth, humour and undeniable chemistry.

*Artist change - please note that the originally scheduled recital by Indra Hughes on the Town Hall pipe organ has been postponed to 2027.

TUESDAY 25 AUGUST @ 1.05pm - Laura Vaughan & Liam Byrne

Blending historical instruments with contemporary textures, this atmospheric performance draws threads across centuries. Berlin-based viola da gambist Liam Byrne is renowned for his interpretations of both early music and cutting-edge contemporary music. He joins Australian gambist Laura Vaughan for a recital pairing Renaissance and Baroque works alongside the new music of today, including specially commissioned works by Australian composers Alice Chance and Brooke Green.

TUESDAY 1 SEPTEMBER @ 1.05pm - Thomas Dunford

Dubbed “the Eric Clapton of the lute” (BBC Music Magazine), dynamic young French virtuoso Thomas Dunford is the leading lutenist of his generation. His stellar international career has seen him perform with many acclaimed ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants, The English Consort, La Serenissima and Les Siècles.

FIVE-CONCERT SEASON PASSES ($65) are available until 4 August 2026.
