Ice and Fire: The Mystery of Heard Island

One of the most remote places on Earth, Heard Island is a landscape of fire, ice and unique ecosystems – a critical climate frontier of extraordinary beauty and extremes.

In this visually rich presentation, four scientists share firsthand experiences of the island, from shrinking glaciers on an active volcano to diverse wildlife in rapidly changing and challenging environments.

Blending science and powerful imagery, the conversation offers a rare window into this sub-Antarctic World Heritage gem and explores what places like Heard Island can teach us about how we understand and protect our planet.

Presented in partnership with the Australian Antarctic Research Conference.

The 2026 Australian Antarctic Research Conference will bring together Australia’s Antarctic research community from the university sector and government agencies across the full breadth of Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and Southern Ocean research.
