EQUALIZE is a practical one-day songwriting and production workshop for women and gender diverse music makers.

Join Grace Chia and EWAH for a songwriting and recording workshop for women and gender diverse* music creators.

Whether you're writing your first song or your fiftieth, you'll spend the day developing your craft, collaborating with other participants, and exploring songwriting and recording techniques.

The day includes:

• Guided songwriting exercises
• Small-group songwriting
• A live demonstration of how a song idea can be turned into a demo
• Networking with other music creators

Perfect for songwriters, producers, singers, instrumentalists and anyone curious about creating music.

You do not need to be an APRA AMCOS member to attend.

Workshop Mentors

Recording & Production: EWAH

Ethereal. Intimate. Expansive. EWAH’s work continues to look forward exploring different approaches to songwriting. Her practice crosses discipline from acting and writing to filmmaking, creative collaborations, leading workshops and scoring for screen.

Songwriting: Grace Chia

Grace Chia is one of Lutruwita’s most exciting emerging artists who uses her music to inspire the change she wants to see. Known for her raw and passionate performances amplifying marginalised voices and uniting community, expect deep-thought lyricism, soulful melodies and punchy bars. She has toured alongside Miss Kaninna, Dirty Dike (UK), Kobie Dee and Draft, and has peformed at MONA, A Festival Called Panama, as well as headline shows across NZ.

In 2025 she was awarded the The Australian Women in Music Award’s 2025 ‘Diversity in Music Award’ for the extensive work she has done to create safe and inclusive spaces for women in hip-hop. Her 2025 sophomore album 'Undulation of a Healing Heart' earned her a spot as triple j Unearthed's Artist of the Week.

This workshop is designed as a full-day experience, with songwriting activities in the morning followed by recording and networking sessions in the afternoon.

• 9:45am - Doors open
• 10:00am - 12:50pm Songwriting activities and collaboration
• 12:50pm - 1:30pm Lunch
• 1:30pm - 3:30pm Recording 101: Starting a Demo
• 3:30pm - 4:30pm Networking
• 4:30pm - Finish

Places are limited and free to attend. If your circumstances change and you're no longer able to attend, please let us know as soon as possible so your place can be offered to someone on the waitlist.

APRA AMCOS staff will contact participants in the week leading up to the workshop to confirm attendance.

Things to know before you book

• You'll be writing and collaborating with other participants throughout the day.
• If you'd like to bring a portable instrument (such as a guitar, ukulele or similar), you're welcome to.
• Songs created during the workshop will use equal songwriting splits (often referred to as the "Nashville Rule"), meaning everyone involved in creating the song will share ownership equally.
• Lunch and snacks will be provided. This is an alcohol free event.
• This event is open to participants aged 16+. Anyone under 18 will need parent or guardian consent to attend.
• Photography and videography will take place throughout the day. If you'd prefer not to be photographed, please let an APRA AMCOS staff member know.
  

Venue & Access Information

• Lift access is available from the main entrance on level one of The Hedberg building. Flat access entry to all levels of the Recital Hall is available via the University entrance.
• There are accessible bathrooms available on all levels of The Hedberg including gender neutral facilities. There are both left hand transfer and right-hand transfer access bathrooms available.
• Quiet spaces are located on level 1 & 3 of the Hedberg Building.
