An Evening of Elegance

Sun 10 May, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

The Student Music Collective present their first performance of 2026, ‘An Evening of Elegance’. After an ambitious and successful year of concerts in 2025, The Secret Orchestral Society make their return for 2026 with a short evening of orchestral favourites in ‘An Evening of Elegance’. This hour-long evening programme welcomes all music lovers, from the seasoned orchestral expert to the intrigued first-timer, and makes for a wonderful end to an early Autumn weekend.  Beethoven’s 8th Symphony marks the centerpiece of this curation, providing a well-balanced hour of strength, whimsy and beauty. Alongside this masterpiece, we present a performance of Mendelssohn’s timeless ‘Die Hebriden’ overture, and Faure’s enchanting orchestral ‘Pavane’.  We welcome back William Newbery to the podium, a rising conductor in Tasmania regularly working with the Secret Orchestral Society, alongside Miaw Yng Lim as concertmaster after her debut as leader in ‘Premiere Rhapsodie’ in October 2025. SMC also welcomes a range of new and existing members, showcasing the rising musicians studying at the University of Tasmania’s recently re-established Conservatorium of Music, alongside other members of the UTAS and broader Hobart classical music scene.  Join us for an hour of orchestral bliss on May 10th at 5pm for ‘An Evening of Elegance’. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY 'Première Rhapsodie' takes place on the unceded lands of the Mouheneener people in nipaluna (Hobart), where sovereignty has never been ceded. The Secret Orchestral Society and the Student Music Collective stands for a history of truth, which acknowledges the ongoing impacts of colonisation upon the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. ACCESSIBILITY The Stanley Burbury Theatre is located on Churchill Avenue in Sandy Bay TAS 7005, on the University of Tasmania Main Campus. There is level access to the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre from the UTAS carpark on Churchill Avenue.  There are several onsite car parks, both in front of the Theatre and in surrounding side streets and University roads. Once inside the venue, there are seats available with level access, in addition to space for wheelchairs and mobility aids.  https://www.utas.edu.au/__data/assets/image/0010/1617976/Stanley-Burbury-Main.jpeg The venue does have an accessible, non-gendered toilet and a changing station. A programme with notes about each of the pieces will be provided, and there will not be an Auslan Interpretor at this event.  Additional information about concerning weather and safety around it will be distributed in the days leading up to the performance. Building Social Cohesion in a Multicultural Country

Wed 13 May, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

As migration to Tasmania continues to grow, the need to build inclusive and welcoming communities has never been more urgent. In this year’s Red Cross Oration, Kate Jenkins AO, President of the Australian Red Cross, draws on her extensive leadership in human rights, governance and social reform to explore the social, cultural and humanitarian dimensions of cohesion in a multicultural society. The Oration includes a panel exploring how communities, services and institutions support new arrivals, alongside the power of lived experience, storytelling, arts and cultural exchange to reduce fear, build trust and strengthen connection. At a time of increasing global uncertainty, this year’s Red Cross Oration asks a vital question: how can diversity become a source of strength for our communities, rather than division?

The Economics of Human Extinction

Thu 21 May, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

Andrew Leigh explores the economics of existential risk and what it will take to respond before it’s too late.   The 2026 Annual Giblin Lecture will be delivered by The Honourable Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury, and Federal Member for Fenner (ACT).   One of Tasmania’s flagship public‑economics events and a cornerstone of the Island of Ideas program, the Giblin Lecture brings leading thinkers, economists, researchers and the wider community together to deepen public understanding of economic issues of public importance.   In this year’s lecture, Dr Leigh explores the economics of existential risk, asking why societies are often slow to respond to catastrophic threats and what economic thinking can contribute to better prevention and preparedness. The Giblin Lecture The Giblin Lecture, established in 1996 and presented annually in association with The Economic Society of Australia (Tasmania Branch), aims to stimulate economic debate on the topics of the day. The lecture is held in honour of Lyndhurst Falkiner Giblin, a Tasmanian born economist (1872-1951), who played an important role in the evolution of economic policy making in Australia. He served as the Tasmanian government statistician and acting Commonwealth statistician, and advised on tariff and depression policies, as well as seeing active duty in the First World War. Ideas worth sharing about issues that matter Island of Ideas invites all Tasmanians to join our series of free public talks designed to ignite conversation and curiosity across our community. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the program brings together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and community voices to discuss the issues that matter. Understanding the Insect Apocalypse

Wed 10 Jun, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

Many insect populations around the world are in steep decline, with serious implications for ecosystems, food production and human wellbeing. While the health of Tasmania’s insect populations remains largely unmeasured, the same pressures driving global losses, including climate change, habitat disruption and industrial agriculture, are already at play here.  Discover the science behind the so‑called insect apocalypse: what’s happening to insect populations, why it matters, and how we can respond. Bringing together leading Tasmanian experts in entomology, ecology and biodiversity, this conversation spans current research, species knowledge, and the real‑world challenges of conservation and land management.  Whether we swat them, study them or simply marvel at them, insects shape our food systems, environments and imaginations. Understanding their decline isn’t just about saving insects. It’s about safeguarding the intricate web of life that sustains us all.

Special Event - Visual Rhetoric in Australian Colonial Art

Sun 14 Jun, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

About This engaging presentation explores how early Australian colonial art drew heavily on visual traditions developed in French and British North America a century earlier. These images, often marked by naïveté and contradiction, nonetheless carry enduring influence, shaping perceptions of Aboriginal people and informing how we understand our place within the Australian landscape today. The lecture will be delivered by Greg Lehman, an internationally respected authority on the history and representation of Tasmanian Aboriginal people. A descendant of the Trawulwuy people of north-east Tasmania, Professor Lehman brings both scholarly depth and personal insight to his work. His distinguished career includes advanced study at Oxford, a PhD from the University of Tasmania, and major curatorial projects such as First Tasmanians at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and the the award-winning touring exhibition The National Picture: The Art of Tasmania’s Black War. This is a rare opportunity to hear from a leading voice in the field and to gain fresh perspective on the visual narratives that continue to shape Australian cultural understanding. All are warmly encouraged to attend. Following the lecture, please join us in the foyer to continue the conversation with the speaker and enjoy viewing a selection of rare colonial engravings and lithographs. This event is a joint presentation between The Royal Society of Tasmania and ArtsNational Hobart. Date Sunday 14 June 2026 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM (UTC+10) Stanley Burbury Theatre UTAS, Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay Tasmania 7000 Cost: $25.00

June Lecture - Peggy Guggenheim - A Life of Collecting

Mon 22 Jun, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

About When Peggy Guggenheim described herself in writing as, "I am a museum", her life took a clear path: from setting up a commercial gallery in London; to travelling to Paris in1939 to buy art, where her intentions were curtailed by the German tanks rolling into the suburbs in April 1940; to escaping to New York with her selection of European art works, and the subsequent establishment of her museum and gallery, ‘Art of This Century’. In 1947 she purchased the eccentric 'unfinished palazzo' in Venice, where her collection remains one of the most iconic assemblages of 20th Century art in the world. About Discover the captivating world of beryl a remarkable gemstone family that gives us emerald, aquamarine, Red Beryl, golden beryl, and morganite. This two-day short course is designed for beginners and curious minds, offering an engaging introduction to the science of gemmology through one of the most diverse and beautiful mineral groups. Across the two days, you’ll learn how gemstones are identified using professional equipment, including microscopes, refractometers, and more, while gaining hands-on insight into how gemmologists distinguish natural stones from synthetics and treatments. We’ll explore what creates emerald’s deep green, aquamarine’s oceanic blues, the warm glow of golden beryl, and the delicate blush of morganite. You’ll begin to understand how trace elements, inclusions, and structure influence both colour and value and why no two stones are ever truly the same. Along the way, we’ll uncover the stories, symbolism, and enduring appeal of these gemstones, from ancient admiration to modern jewellery. Whether you’re a jewellery lover, a budding collector, or simply intrigued by the hidden world within gemstones, this course offers a rare opportunity to see and understand the beauty beneath the surface. THE BIG BIKE FILM NIGHT 2026 Let the good times roll! The Big Bike Film Night is riding into town, on its mission to bring the best cycling short films from around the world together for you. Showcasing our 2026 collection that has everything a cycle-centric audience could want - action, drama, humour, and plenty of inspiration; the evening is unashamedly and utterly, utterly, utterly designed and devised to delight the two-wheel devotee! There’s always an air of mystique about The Big Bike Film Night; we’re not your typical mainstream film festival, we’re left field and damn proud of it.  Treasuring where a bike can take you, our annual curated collection of short bike films is unashamedly devised and designed to delight the two-wheel devotee in celebrating the fun, the adventure, and the inspiration that cycling enables. We don’t reveal what films go into our collections; just like riding a bike –it’s the journey and not the destination that is important, but here are some insights... The 2026 treasure chest of films includes: a dazzling mountain bike ride exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Norway, embracing the magic of the midnight sun an inspiring film that captures the wettest, most miserable/heinous riding conditions imaginable two friends exploring by gravel bike seven of New Zealand’s Great Rides that are located throughout the Southern Way regions a film that playfully delves into the world of those taking cycling to new heights - celebrating fun, silliness, and creativity that comes with pushing boundaries on two wheels a compelling story about perseverance, showcasing the challenges and triumphs of navigating daily life following a life-altering injury, and how adaptive design has transformed and enriched the journey forward a moving movie that follows a father and son’s journey as they take on one of life’s most meaningful milestones- riding a bike together as a family a bold and uplifting story of an adventure activist, attempting to break the 24-hour Guinness World Record in downhill mountain biking- all to raise funds for reforesting foothills around Queenstown, New Zealand. Her relentless pursuit not only pushes the limits of endurance but also becomes a powerful symbol of resilience and environmental commitment and crowning the night off… we all love an underdog tale. This charming, funny, heartfelt film inspires us to believe that we all have the capacity to be unlikely heroes in our own stories. The audience is transported back to the nostalgic 1990s, to the slopes of the punishing Mont Ventoux, in Southern France, to witness the drama of a battle between two giants ALL in the mix! These short films are a great reminder of why we love to ride our bike; with stories that captivate us, stories that make us think, and most importantly of all – inspiring us to get out and ride. All celebrate the fun, adventure, and joy that cycling enables. So...listen to the voice inside you; it’s telling you to go. Grab your mates, GO ON… grab your bike and come along for the ride!! October Lecture - ‘Once upon a time … in blue and white’

Mon 12 Oct, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

About The story of the ‘Willow Pattern Plate’ is well known: two lovers meeting underneath an orange tree, an elopement, a fierce father and jilted suitor, a pursuit across a bridge into a little boat, tragedy and death: two lovebirds flying together forever under the gentle sway of the willow tree. From the early 19th Century this well-known design has been on thousands of English teapots, plates and dishes. Is it Chinese? Is it English? The story behind this famous image takes us from the origins of blue and white designs in the exotic East to the emerging wealth of the Midlands pottery towns. November Lecture - Cutting Rhythms, shaping stories

Mon 23 Nov, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sandy Bay TAS 7005

About Few aspects of creative filmmaking are as shrouded in mystery as the work of the film editor, who will usually say their art is intuitive. Karen Pearlman puts forward the idea that editing is a form of choreography. She shows how editors shape movement – of story, of emotion, of image and of sound, into moving experiences for an audience. Clips from Pearlman’s award-winning films are woven into this story of how cuts work, where they are hidden, why they are made the way they are, and who is behind the good ideas that come out in the editing process. For full details of the lecture see our website - https://www.artsnational.au/societies/hobart/ Date Monday 23 November 2026 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (UTC+10) Stanley Burbury Theatre UTAS, Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay Tasmania 7000 Cost: $0.00 - $35.00
